As of 1994, Claudio Moriani is the Director of the Office for Piemonte and Valle d'Aosta of the Italian National Institute of Statistics.

Born in Rome the 2nd of february 1952, degree in classical high school he is graduated at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in Statistic and Demography cum laude. He has also attended the ENI business school "Enrico Mattei". Member of the ISI (International Statistical Institute.

Contract Professor of Econometrics at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of Campobasso - University of Molise in academic years 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, and of Economic Statistics Institutions at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of Cosenza - University of Calabria in academic years 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93.

Initially assigned to labour force survey, he has developed the labour force transition matrices methodology. Afterwards, acting as the responsible of the Director General's technical secretary he has designed and implemented the survey on "Quantitative distribution of income in Italy from family budgets surveys".

In 1986, he is appointed chief of the Labour Information System Center, charged of performing a consultancy on behalf of ISTAT to the Italian Ministry of Labour, concerning the development of a statistical data base on labour, and the assistance to the same Ministry in its statistical surveys. Afterwards, he is charged of the project of renewal of ISTAT labour force sample survey.

In 1986 he is also nominated member of the Italian Commission for Surveying Poverty at the Italian Premier's Office, in 1991 he is assigned to the International Relations Unit, and in 1994 he is promoted to the actual position, that during years from 1995 to 1997 was extended also to the direction of the ISTAT Office for Liguria. He has recently directed the General Censuses of Agriculture (2000), Population(2001) and Industry (2001) for the geofraphical area mentioned before.

He has been lecturer in various seminars, among which "Labour statistics" (International Labour Office, Torino, 1986, 1987). He has also participated in economic studies on poverty, published by Eurostat, and has acted as a consultant for the International Labour Office (UN), in the design and implementation of a labour information system for the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Labour (1988). He has also participated to the first agreements for the preparation of training courses in the Former Soviet Union (1993),and to the design of a household survey for Eritrea (1993), together with experts of the World Bank.
